Challenge

Demand for high-quality IP TV content is at an all-time high driven by increasing global internet penetration, but competition from local cable/satellite remains fierce due to its lower costs and the lack of adequate IP infrastructure to deliver jitter-free service in some geographies.

To compete beyond price, IP media companies started packaging services to include video streaming (OTT), video calling/conferencing, smart home features, and video-game offerings. Delivering this additional functionality requires frequent software updates. IP and IPTV companies are forced to adopt new, agile DevOps processes to support necessary updates and meet faster cycle times.

This IP Network and TV Provider needed to rapidly transform its operations from a traditional software release model to a more rapid, agile DevOps approach across multiple software departments, but faced natural, cultural resistance to this change. Teams with experience in agile DevOps recognized its value and wanted to race ahead in deployment, but lacked evidence to support their ideas. More traditional teams bristled at the speed and extent of this change. The lack of a unified, cross-unit management scorecard and frequent inconsistencies in reported results of key performance indicators like deployment frequency, number of outages, meantime to restore, and lead time for software changes fueled their resistance.

The Client needed a new reporting and monitoring scorecard that delivered accurate, timely data to gain acceptance across the organization. They also wanted the ability for teams to “self-service” requests for additional information.
