Challenge

Hypertension is the leading preventable cause of premature death worldwide. According to the Center for Disease Control, in 2017, in the US alone, it caused 1.3 million visits to emergency rooms resulting in 35,000 deaths and high patient medical costs. Many hypertensive individuals maintain their health using drugs (e.g., statins), but these drugs sometimes have undesirable side effects.

This global healthcare provider committed to inventing and deploying a remote medical device that enables hypertensive patients and their caregivers to provide their own monitoring and care management without the side effects caused by more typical drug regimens. Unfortunately, the architecture the healthcare provider initially implemented did not meet the They needed to re-architect their legacy system to better support the delivery of patient self-care.

Response times were too slow even for relatively simple uses. Limited performance meant that the healthcare provider could not add the ease of use functionality they needed to support patients directly.
